AIRPORT PROCEDURES

The entrance to Spain with weapons is quite simple, if you have a European arms permit it is only sealed in the Police of the arrival airport (Guardia Civil).

If you are from a country outside the European Union you need to contact the consulate of Spain in your country of origin to obtain a letter of invitation prior to the trip.

FIREARMS TRANSPORT

Transporting firearms in commercial aircraft

Regulated firearms, the acquisition, possession and use of which is authorized or permitted, must be checked in and transported in the hold of the aircraft.

Conditions of carriage

• Firearms must be unloaded and properly packaged to ensure their safety during the journey.
• Ammunition must be transported in a hard case which is separate from that used to transport the firearm.

Procedure to be followed at the airport of departure.

A. Firearms control

Residents of Spain, or those of the EU who are in Spain in transit and who are going to travel with a firearm, must present the following documentation:

• DNI (Spanish national ID document) or passport.
• Firearm license (only residents of Spain).
• Firearm certificate (only residents of Spain).
• Ticket to travel.
• European Firearms Pass (EFP), if travelling to countries which are members of the EU or which have agreements relating to the EFP (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and the Principality of Liechtenstein).

Where an individual requests authorization to transport a firearm which is not the property of that individual, he or she must present an authorization from the owner.

Foreign passengers from outside the EU must present the following documentation:

• Passport.
• Special permit granted on entering Spain.
• Flight ticket.
• Form 790 must be filled in (one form per passenger) and the relevant fee must be paid, which may be done at any bank near the firearms control office. For your convenience, you may fill in form 790 and pay the fee at any bank before arriving at the airport.

Along with the receipt for the relevant fee, you will be issued with a firearms boarding authorization.

Once the firearms boarding authorization and the firearms and ammunition cases have been checked, you must go to the check-in desk for the airline with which you are going to travel.

B. Check-in desk

The firearm must be checked-in by the passenger, who must present the airline staff in charge of check-in with the authorization, in his or her name, from the Civil Guard's firearms and explosives control unit (Intervención de Armas y Explosivos).

In addition to the required documentation, the cases containing the firearm and the ammunition must be handed over with the luggage to be checked in.

The airline staff in charge of check-in will seal the firearms and ammunition, in accordance with the rules.

Procedure to be followed at the airport of arrival.

If your destination is a country within the EU, you should know that the European Firearms Pass will be the documentation for your firearm. You must not forget to present it to the competent authorities at the border entry point, so that, once it has been checked and stamped, along with the invitation to hunt or take part in a sporting activity, it is properly authorized.

If your destination is a country outside the EU, inquire at the embassy or consulate for that country in Spain regarding current local legislation relating to the possession, transportation and use of firearms.

You must collect your firearms from the airport's firearms and explosives control office, where you will have to present the authorization issued to you on departure.
